The 50th Anniversary Special for Doctor Who is just around the corner, and with it comes a new regeneration, with veteran actor Peter Capaldi replacing the outgoing Matt Smith and heralding series eight. One of the first directors to be confirmed for the new series, which airs in autumn of 2014, is Ben Wheatley (Kill List, Sightseers).
Wheatley is said to be directing the first two episodes, and the director himself is very excited about the opportunity, being a huge Doctor Who fan himself:
“I am very excited and honoured to be asked to direct the first two episodes of the new series of Doctor Who,” the director told Screendaily.
“I’ve been a fan since childhood (Tom Baker is my Doctor if you are asking), I’ve been watching the current run of Doctor Who with my son and have discovered it all over again.
“The work that has been done is amazing. I’m really looking forward to working with Peter Capaldi and finding out where Steven Moffat is planning to take the new Doctor.”
