Given how lucrative comic book movie franchises are, and how the Spider-Man license gives Sony access to a wealth of characters, it’s no surprise that they have plans to expand their library with spin-offs, which they have confirmed recently. The two new standalone films being planned are for Spidey’s sometime nemesis/sometimes ally Venom and The Sinister Six.
Sony isn’t pussy-footing with their planned expansion of the franchise, as evidenced by the creative team they have assembled to handle the projects: Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon and Drew Goddard all set to work on the new films.
“The Spider-Man film franchise is one of our studio’s greatest assets,” said Columbia President Doug Belgrad. “We are thrilled with the creative team we have assembled to delve more deeply into the world.”
