Sony Pictures Animation has recently tapped cartoon network veteran Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Powerpuff Girls, Clone Wars) to direct a 3D CG movie adaptation of Popeye, according to a Variety report.
The movie will be produced by Arad Productions’ Avi and Ari Arad, in partnership with Sony’s inhouse animation studio, Sony Pictures Animation. Details have been sparse as of late, since Tartakovsky is still busy promoting his most recent project with Sony, the upcoming horror comedy CG movie, Hotel Transylvania, which focuses on a hotel resort for monsters being run by Dracula himself.
While it’s the first Popeye 3D movie, it will not be the first time we’ll get to see the spinach-eating sailor jutting around in the big screen, since there have been a previous live action Popeye movie, starring Robin Williams, back in 1980. This is also not the first time we’ll see Popeye rendered using polygons, since we’ve also seen him in full 3D glory in a recent videogame.
There are no release dates announced for the Tartakovsky-helmed Popeye 3D movie at the time of writing.
