Iron Man 3 recently broke box office records and managed to snag the honor of being the 2nd biggest box office opening in history (it was only beaten by its sister movie, The Avengers), but it’s not all good news, as the movie also signifies the end of Robert Downey Jr.’s contract for the role of Tony Stark.
However, the Hollywood Reporter brings a little bit of good news as they have reported that talks have begun between Downey Jr’s camp and Marvel over a potential return. It has been noted that Downey recently attended a private dinner for Disney and Marvel execs, where the new deal is discussed.
The talks are said to be regarding The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3, where Iron Man will be playing a key role. A fourth Iron Man film is not on the agenda, as Downey is not guaranteed to return for another solo outing.
It’s pretty much expected that keeping Downey around will cost Disney and Marvel, but given the $175.3 million opening weekend take of Iron Man 3, the dude is worth every penny.
