The third installment in Marvel’s Iron Man movie franchise managed to post the 2nd biggest opening weekend in US box office history, which certainly makes the powers that be happy, but now that the actor’s contract has expired, people are wondering what will become of the franchise, as there’s no denying that Downey jr.’s charming portrayal of the billionaire playboy is responsible for a large part of the movie’s success.
There have been reports that Downey is under negotiations to renew his contract, but it’s not yet clear on whether it will be for another solo movie or just as part of another Avengers movie. Downey himself did not make any promises, though he expressed his desire to return to the role:
“I’d go start another one tomorrow,” said Downey of the Iron Man franchise, “but it’s not tomorrow. And there are a lot of other considerations. But I also don’t like the idea of leaving people hanging or leaving people in the lurch.”
Downey was also honest about wanting to branch out and do other things, which is understandable since he’s been around since the founding days of the current Marvel Movie Universe:
“My intent is to launch another franchise,” continued the star, “independent of any that I can even imagine right now. My intent is to dominate the playing field for as long as I can, with my own challenges, with myself.”
