Robert De Niro Interested in Taxi Driver Sequel 0

The possibility of a follow-up to Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro’s has already been shot down multiple times in the past, and it’s understandable that it no longer even becomes subject to rumors, even though Hollywood has been on a remake/sequel kick these past few years. However, the actor who originally played main character Travis Bickle, Robert De Niro, has recently admitted that he is still interested in the prospect of revisiting the movie:

“I had that idea, I talked to Marty [Scorsese] and Paul [Schrader] and we did take a shot at something, whether it was an outline or a script, I forget. But somehow we didn’t feel it was right and it didn’t take off.”

“But I’d like to see where Travis is today. There was something about the guy – all that rage and alienation, that’s what the city can do to you. I mean Marty and I are from New York, and even we can feel alienated.”

As for the long-running fan theory that Travis actually died at the end of the film and that the closing sequence is just a fantasy, De Niro is welcoming but is willing to leave the doors open for other possibilities:

“Well, that’s an interesting theory,” responds De Niro. “I know that was not the intention, but it’s as valid as anything.”
