In a recent Q & A Session with Hitflix.com, Christopher Nolan revealed that he originally considered Heath Ledger for the role of Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins, only for Ledger to politely decline as the actor didn’t want to star in a comic book movie:
“He didn’t like to work too much,” Nolan explains of the actor. “He liked to do a character and then stop working and let enough time go by until he was hungry for it again.”
When Ledger saw what Nolan did in Batman Begins, he was impressed and agreed to meet in order to talk about The Dark Knight:
“And that’s what happened when he came in; he was really ready to do something like that.”
Of course, if Ledger agreed to be the Batman in the first place, the Trilogy would have encountered problems when he passed away even before Rises was completed. Additionally, it also means that we wouldn’t have had the brilliant Joker performance that the actor gave us.
On the other hand, we believe Ledger would have been able to pull off a good enough Wayne, and in a What If scenario, we’re also under the belief that Christian Bale – considering his American Psycho performance – would have made a different, yet equally effective Joker.
