A recent Variety report has revealed that the screenwriting team behind Nicolas Cage’s National Treasure franchise, Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, were tapped by Sony Pictures to pen the movie adaptation for the hit videogame Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.
The studio is hoping that the duo can give the upcoming Uncharted movie the same things that made National Treasure a box office success. Reports have it that Sony is banking on Uncharted as its next big movie franchise.
Sony is also looking for a new director for the project, with Neil Burger bowing out of the project in order to focus on the book adaptation Divergent. The Uncharted movie adaptation is one of the recent projects to have suffered from an on-again off-again pre-prod, with original director David O. Russell fighting for the adaptation in February 2011 only to leave in order to focus on The Silver Linings Playbook. Burger was then attached to the project, revealing that he was “rewriting from scratch.”
