If Sony Pictures can get their way, we’ll probably see another big screen adaptation of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, as the studio is currently in talks with director Jon M. Chu about making a new live-action take on the popular toy and cartoon franchise.
It’s still very early to tell if it will come to pass, though, since Chu is still busy working on GI Joe: Retaliation, which is currently on hold in order to undergo expensive 3D post-conversion.
If Chu signs on the dotted line, the resulting movie will be the second live action He-Man movie since Gary Goddard’s Masters of the Universe in the 80s, which starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man. While Lundgren’s He-Man was well-received by fans, it is expected that Sony will be going for a less campy approach to the franchise. At least, they will try. There’s not a lot you can do to reduce camp in a property based on a half-naked, blonde muscleman who rides armored tigers and fights a half-naked skeleton.
