It’s pretty much common knowledge at this point that Nolan is very secretive about his projects, but a recent interview with Liam Neeson (who played villain Ra’s Al Ghul in Nolan’s Batman trilogy) shows that Nolan takes being cagey to another level:
“[Nolan] takes it to another extreme,” explains Neeson. “I didn’t know I was in the movie! I went and shot a scene for two hours with Christian Bale. There was a set, and Christian was tied up.
“I said, ‘Chris, what am I doing?’ [As Nolan:] ‘Um… well, just walk forward, and say the lines, walk back, and that’ll be it, really.’ I said, ‘What the fuck? Tell me the story!’ [As Nolan:] ‘Um… I’d prefer not to, really.’ ‘Okay, don’t mind me. I’m just an actor.’”
The amount of secrecy Nolan wants to achieve is surprising in itself, but what’s even more amazing is that he has enough clout to call someone like Neeson to the set, not tell him what’s going on, and still manage to get the veteran actor to do what he’s told.
