A new teaser image has been released for Pete Travis’ Judge Dredd reboot, which is simply titled “Dredd”. The image shows a battle-scarred Lena Headey as the vicious gang leader Ma-Ma.
The Ma-Ma character, originally named Madeline Madrigal, is responsible for the flooding of Megacity One with the reality altering drug called Slo-Mo, with said drug dealings putting her right on the path of Judge Dredd (played by Karl Urban)’s law enforcement duties.
Heady has recently discussed her character with Hero Complex, comparing the villain to a great white shark in the way that she dominated Megacity One’s crime scene:
“I think of her like an old great white shark who’s just waiting for someone bigger and stronger to show up and kill her,” explains Headey. “She’s ready for it. In fact, she can’t wait for it to happen. And yet no one can get the job done. She’s an addict, so she’s dead in that way, but that last knock just hasn’t come.”
Headey also assured fans that the reboot will be darker and more serious than the much-maligned Sylvester Stallone version back in the 90s.
“The world [in the film] feels really British,” she says, “and I don’t know if that’s because it’s so dirty and dark. And it’s violent. Just in terms of gunplay, they’re not afraid to show blood and gunshot wounds. And it’s set up in this concrete sort of shanty town – it’s shanty but they’re blocks – concrete favelas.”
Dredd is scheduled to open in the UK on September 7, 2012.
