In a recent interview with IGN, Joss Whedon has publicly denied the rumors that The Avengers 2 and 3 will be based on the Planet Hulk storyline from the comic books. When Whedon was asked if there’s validity to the rumors, Whedon had a sharp response:
“Well, I’m really not supposed to comment, but no, that’s nonsense.”
Marvel does not exactly have a reputation for sticking to their word (for instance, the studio has initially denied Loki’s appearance in the Avengers and Ben Kingsley being cast as the Mandarin in Iron Man 3, before both rumors were revealed to be true), but we’ll have to take Whedon’s word for this one.
Part of the reason why Marvel is not so keen on a Planet Hulk storyline is probably because of the divisive response to the animated direct-to-DVD version, and the fact that the storyline will eventually lead into World War Hulk, which turns Hulk into a villain of sorts (a misunderstood, misguided one, but a villain nonetheless.) and they don’t want the character to turn heel so soon.
