The announcement that James Spader will be playing the robot supervillain Ultron in the upcoming Avengers sequel came out of left field, but director and Marvel consultant Joss Whedon firmly believes that the casting decision was spot on, and that Spader was the only man for the job.
“Spader was my first and only choice,” says Whedon. “He’s got that hypnotic voice that can be eerily calm and compelling, but he’s also very human and humorous.”
“Ultron is not Hal. Spader can play all of the levels. He’s the guy to break The Avengers into pieces. Muwahaha.”
Of course, while people didn’t expect Spader’s casting at first, nobody that we know actually opposes it (compared to the Ben Affleck casting, for example). It’s either people agreed with the choice or didn’t know who Spader was. Besides, Joss Whedon’s casting reputation is still pristine, and when he says Spader is the man for the job, fans are willing to give him a chance.
