It’s a sad piece of news that Will Smith is unlikely to return for the Independence Day sequel, but as a way of soothing the sting a little bit, Roland Emmerich has confirmed that one of the tentpoles of the original film, Jeff Goldblum, will be returning to reprise his original role for Independence Day 2.
It was during a Q & A with Movies.com that the director confirmed the return of Goldblum as the jittery computer genius, David Levinson. He will be joining the other alumnus Bill Pullman, who will reprise his role as President Whitmore. Although as far as the story goes, Whitmore is no longer in office as the sequel is being set 17 years after the original, so it will be interesting to see how he fits in with the story.
Emmerich also expressed that even though Smith is out of the list, he is still hoping that the actor will be persuaded to return, even if just in a cameo capacity.
