Progress for Fox’s Independence Day sequel seems to be moving along at a nice pace, as evidenced by the fact that they have already decided on a US release date: July 3, 2015. It’s a long wait, but that will at least give the studio enough leeway to weather any delays or setbacks.
Independence Day 2 is said to be one of two ID sequels that are entering the production stage, as Roland Emmerich himself has recently confirmed that he is viewing the next film as the start of a new franchise.
According to Emmerich, ID 2 be set a couple of decades after the events in the original film, with the aliens returning to Earth in order to mount another attempt at a hostile takeover.
It’s still not clear whether Will Smith will be returning (although the possibility has not yet been denied), but Bill Pullman has already confirmed his participation. Emmerich says that the sequel will feature a refreshing mix of new and old characters:
“It’s still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters,” said Emmerich, who has co-written the script with Dean Devlin. “It’s a little bit like the sons take over.”
