In a recent interview with IGN, Guillermo del Toro has revealed that he is currently in the process of penning a sequel to the mecha vs. kaiju epic Pacific Rim, but before you get your hopes up on a follow-up, the director has admitted that he has no idea on whether the project will be approved.
“We are writing the sequel,” said del Toro to IGN. “Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to greenlight or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate.”
If we’re going to base everything on profitability, Pacific Rim does have a high chance of being greenlit, as the film managed to gross $407 million worldwide while only costing $190 million to make. One thing that may factor in is that the domestic performance of the film was below the expectations of the studio, which is a disappointment considering that the film was supposed to introduce the Kaiju and Mecha subgenres to the West, under Hollywood’s own terms.
