At the recent BAFTA ceremony’s red carpet, Elizabeth Olsen dropped a brief hint regarding what we can expect from the upcoming Godzilla reboot by Gareth Edwards. While she didn’t give away any specific detail about the plot, she revealed that the tone of the film will be far darker than the lizard’s previous outing in Hollywood:
“It’s definitely not light-hearted,” Olsen said of Edwards’ approach to the well-worn story. “It’s kind of going back to its roots of the original Japanese film.”
It should be noted that the original Japanese Godzilla movie was meant to be a metaphor for the dangers of a nuclear war, with the film treating the giant monster as a terrifying, unstoppable force of nature instead of the giant mascot that he eventually turned into once Mothra and co. came along.
Scripted by Frank Darabont and co-starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Bryan Cranston, Godzilla will open in the UK on 16 May 2014.
