Batman 3: The Dark Knight Rises

Hold on to your capes! The hype train for the third film in the newest Batman franchise is gearing up and ready to go. We’re still at the early stage of all the rumors and reports, with basic tidbits; Christopher Nolan is behind everything, Christian Bale is within the cowl, etc. All of the major stars, from Gordon to Fox, are expected to return. Beyond that, we haven’t heard much, other than the standard rumors of Angelina Jolie as Catwoman, Johnny Depp as the Riddler, Philip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin, etc. However, recently, we’ve received word on two pieces of information we can take to the Gotham Bank: there will be no “Riddler”, and the title of Batman 3 will be The Dark Knight Rises.

The first two films, The Dark Knight and Batman Begins, each featured amazing IMAX scenes, which Nolan will eagerly follow up on; pumping out as much high definition IMAX footage as he possibly can. However, unlike pretty much every single other movie of the past 2 years, The Dark Knight Rises will not be in 3D, with Nolan finally convincing Warner Bros. that the HD IMAX cameras were the way to go. Sounds good to us – we’re sick of the 3D goggles.

During the last Batfilms, the third installment, Batman Forever, saw a duo of villains between Jim Carrey’s Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones’ Two-Face. This was in addition to a new director, new musical composers, and, of course, a new Batman. But for Dark Knight Rises, we have the same director, writer, and composers, same Batman, and a guarantee from Nolan about no Edward Nigma and no recently-departed (and confirmed dead) Harvey Dent.

So, who are we left with? With the script hunting for a new love interest, perhaps this is a key time to introduce Catwoman, for romance and foil? Talia to herald the “rising” return of Ra’s al Ghul? Maybe we’ll get a Deathstroke showdown, or perhaps someone entirely new. What’s your take?
