Agent Coulson is probably one of the most popular characters in Marvel’s movie universe, proving to be loved more by fans compared to some actual members of The Avengers. So it’s no reason that people are still waiting for a return, even though he has already been killed by Loki in the first Avengers movie. There wasn’t any body shown, so there is an opening, should Marvel want to stage a comeback. However, Joss Whedon says that he’s got too much on his plate right now, and can’t devote time to a Coulson return.
“He could,” concedes Whedon. “Right now it’s not something I’m pursuing because I have so much going on in Avengers 2. Finding out that Coulson is alive would be an entire B story. And I already have too much movie!”
Additionally, Whedon also confirms that he’s trying his best to ensure that the new S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show will not exist in a vacuum, and will at least have some connection with the films.
“We need to make sure there’s some crossover,” says Whedon, “but not so much that people go, ‘Well, I don’t need to see that movie. I saw it on TV.’ If we do that, Kevin Feige is going to come after me with a pitchfork.”
