New Neo Geo Handheld Details Revealed

It used to be a rumor, and was even accused of being a hoax made from a photoshopped iPhone screenshot, but the new handheld Neo Geo gaming device, called the Neo Geo X, has been confirmed and the details about its pricing and availability has been announced.

The Neo Geo X Gold package is scheduled to launch on December 6 of this year, will consist of the portable Neo Geo X device itself, along with a dock that is shaped exactly like the old Neo Geo home console. The dock has a video output functionality, which allows you to play the Neo Geo X on your TV, using the slightly smaller than original version of the Neo Geo arcade stick controller, which is also included in the Gold package.

Pricing for the package is $199.99, which puts it in competition with the 3DS and Vita. However, since this is just a way to play classic 2D Neo Geo games, the target will mostly be hardcore collectors instead of casual and core gamers. Some critics may pan the handheld for being underpowered at that price range, but considering that the original home console version retailed at $500-700 dollars, the premium price is not surprising. In any case, the included accessories should more than make up for the Neo Geo X Gold package’s steep price, since it doubles as a home console as well. Additionally, the portable will launch with the following games already preloaded:

3 Count Bout
Art Of Fighting II
Alpha Mission II
Baseball Stars II
Cyber Lip
Fatal Fury
Fatal Fury Special
The King Of Fighters ’95
King Of The Monsters
Last Resort
League Bowling
Magician Lord
Metal Slug
Mutation Nation
Nam 1975
Real Bout – Fatal Fury Special
Samurai Shodown II
Super Sidekicks
