Square-Enix knows their way around iOS, and has been busy porting some of their old games in there, as well as churning out the odd new IP here and there like Chaos Rings and Drakerider. However, their most controversial game – in terms of how much people want them to remake it already – Final Fantasy VII, might not appear on Apple’s nifty little gadgets for quite some time (unless you count Emulators), and the reason is simple: space limitations.
In an interview with Shacknews, Square Enix director and producer Takashi Tokita admitted that space will be an issue as Final Fantasy VII consumers more than a gigabyte if ported straight, which means a remake with extra content and/or increased visuals won’t be possible due to Apple’s 2GB limit on iOS games. For comparison, the latest PC release of FFVII was over 3 GB.
“It’s definitely going to be years before we do the port,” says Tokita.
