One of the most divisive topics in gaming is the issue of cutscenes, in the sense that there as many people who want them in their games as there are who plainly loathe it, depending on the genre. However, when it comes to the next installment of the Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS, producer Masahiro Sakurai has decided for everybody as he stated that cutscenes won’t be returning, and neither will the story mode.
One of the reasons, according to Sakurai, is that they didn’t like Brawl’s cutscenes being leaked online, and wants to preserve the feeling of surprise for new players:
“Unfortunately, the movie scenes we worked hard to create were uploaded onto the Internet. You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees [a cutscene]. I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I’ve decided against having them.”
That doesn’t necessarily mean Sakurai is thumbing his nose up at the online community, as he clarified that his team is instead putting together videos that are specifically designed to be shared online.
