With over 5 million units sold since the Nintendo 3DS’ launch back in February 26, 2011, Nintendo’s latest handheld has exceeded the first-year sales of the original DS, the GBA, and even the Wii.
Nintendo has also released a graph that shows the amount of 3DS units sold in comparison to the Gameboy Advance, original DS, and Wii. The development is understandably unexpected, since the Nintendo 3DS was originally panned upon its release due to a lackluster set of launch titles as well as its dependence on the 3D gimmick, with some people even referring to it as “the next Virtual Boy”.
Of course, the same surprising market recovery also happened with the original DS, and we all know that the Wii, while much faster in proving itself through sales, was also criticized for being too gimmicky compared to its then-competitors.
Lets just hope that the PSVita can also get itself out of the rut it’s currently stuck in.
