After being the one of the key figures in the company that gave birth to the First Person Shooter genre of games, iD Software, world famous programmer and developer John Carmack has officially left the company that he himself helped co-found decades ago in Mesquite, TX.
According to an official statement that iD Software gave to IGN.com, Carmack is now looking towards things other than game development at Id. It is said that Carmack wants to focus more on his role as the Chief Technology Officer of Oculus VR, a position that he has already announced earlier this year.
ID Software’s statement also assures fans that Carmack’s work on the upcoming id Tech 5 engine id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects.
Carmack also posted a tweet explaining his reasons for leaving:
I wanted to remain a technical adviser for Id, but it just didn't work out. Probably for the best, as the divided focus was challenging.
