Despite all the horsepower under Apple’s iPad 2 (it’s got a 1 Ghz dual core ARM cpu and a quad core PowerVR GPU), the best games for it are still the 2D, retro-inspired offerings by large developers. Square Enix doesn’t seem intent on bucking the trend, as they have just released another old school, 2D game on the app store titled Final Fantasy All the Bravest.
Final Fantasy All the Bravest looks similar to the old 16-bit RPGs on the SNES, right down to the actual sprites being used. However, it does a few things that will not be possible on low-powered hardware, such as the ability to pit as many as 40 party members against an equally sized enemy force, and the games are all Active Time Battle showdowns – which means you don’t have the luxury of taking long bathroom breaks between turns. Additionally, the attacks are pulled off via taps and drags across party members. You can check out the video below to see what I’m talking about:
Final Fantasy All the Bravest features over 20 characters that are unlockable through normal game progress, and 35 more premium characters available as in-app purchases. The base game itself is available for $3.99 via the iOS app store.
