In the most recent digital issue of Total Film, Sir Ben Kingsley discussed his role as The Mandarin in Iron Man 3, particularly regarding his prior knowledge of the character in the comic books, and how he managed to avoid Fu Manchu-style racial stereotypes.
“I didn’t have any template to copy,” says Kingsley. ” I’m undereducated as far as Marvel comics are concerned, and that can be a good thing, like coming to a Shakespeare play fresh rather than having done it 20 times.”
So I guess we can’t expect the movie to focus much on the Mandarin’s 10 ancient magical rings and his pet dragon, Fin Fang Foom. Although Marvel has managed to provide a nice modern update on the villains and characters they have tackled so far, so it wouldn’t be that surprising if those things do end up in the movie, except in portrayed in a much more realistic manner.
